BIG IDEA

God can use you to help those in need.

MEET EYERUS

Eyerus is a smart, kind, and compassionate girl who has big dreams for her future. She has experienced hardships but she now has a confident hope.

Watch the video (read the subtitles for your little kiddos) and then discuss it together as a family.

TALK ABOUT IT

How does it feel to be really hungry?

Imagine what it would be like to sit down at the table and not know if you would have any lunch to eat. Eyerus would miss many meals because she didn’t have any food to eat.

Even though we don’t know how it feels, can we still help children like Eyerus?

Yes, God puts compassion and love in our hearts so we can care for others.

Eyerus said she wants to be a doctor when she grows up to help others like her. What can you do to help others?

You don’t have to wait until you are grown up to help those in need. Talk about ways to show kindness, love, and generosity to others.

FUN FACTS

Eyerus’s name is pronounced (ee-eh-roos) It comes from the word Eyerusalem,   which is Amharic for Jerusalem.

The national food in Ethiopia is injera, which is a spongy flatbread that is eaten with meat, vegetables, and beans.

It is a custom in Ethiopia to feed a friend or family member a piece of your meal first as a sign of friendship and love.

BIBLE VERSE

Isaiah 58:10

If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.

QUESTIONS

What does it mean to “pour yourself out for the hungry”?

How does giving to the poor make YOUR light shine?

When you give to others in need how will you feel?

BIG IDEA

God can use you to help those in need.

When we pour ourselves out for those who are hungry or hurting we are being like Jesus. Sharing the love of Jesus by giving to the poor will not only provide for others’ needs, but you will feel happy and it will show others how bright your life is in a world that needs hope.

Close in prayer

Lord, thank you for giving us food to eat every day. We are grateful you provide for our needs and we ask that you would give others the food they need for today. Please use us, that we would give to those who are in need and shine your light into their lives. Amen.

ACTIVITY

Go outside and pour water onto the driveway. Talk about what will happen to the driveway after pouring the water (it will dry up)!

Now, water a flower, vegetable plant, or house plant. Talk about how it will grow and even give you something in return (a beautiful flower, a fruit or vegetable to eat).
